Elgol beach

Elgol is a small settlement of almost 100 people set on a hillside in the parish of Strath overlooking the pier and the Cuillins of Skye. The pier is at the heart of the community servicing a small fishing fleet and a growing number of cruise boats that will take you to the primitive wonder of Loch Coruisk.
Elgol was formed in the Jurassic period and basically sits on sandstone, limestone and shale which in turn provide an excellent hunting ground for fossils.
Traditionally held by the Clan Mackinnon, myth has it that the name'Elgol' is derived from 'weeping swan' after a viking ship was burned on the shore nearby.
